Anyone Interested in Watching Bon Iver Perform As the Sun Rises on a Sunday Morning?

Picture this…camping out under the stars under the beautiful Hollywood Forever Cemetary at 12midnight, in the morning Bon Iver performs as the sun rises over the horizon…sounds intriguing right? Well, dream on! Problem is no one can get tickets!

I was so pissed off that Bon Iver tickets were hard to get for the Sunrise Show at Hollywood Forever Cemetary for Sunday, September 27 and scalpers have upped the value for who should be a low key artist. I mean seriously, who the hell does his managing team think he is, Bob Dylan? Well, fuck that; he’s not. And thank God for that! Indie/Folk is about enjoying good music in a low pressure atmosphere, but this concert is stirring up unneccessary controversy and… ticket scalpers! Wake up people! It’s Bon Iver not the L.A. Kings. Below is a copy of the email I sent to Bon Iver’s booking agent, please feel free to send him more hate mail. adam@billions.com

Adam Voith,

I’m not sure if you are aware but the tickets for the Bon Iver show at the Hollywood Forever Theatre are being sold by scalpers for $100 and up while I happen to know that the face value is only $25. Tickets that are hard to come by lead to scalping which is counter intuitive to the whole indie/folk genre (low-key, underground, good vibes)!

When asking Hollywood Forever for these tickets, I was told for about two weeks that tickets to this event weren’t yet available, that I should wait until they become available, and that they would definitely not sell out. I searched several different websites, none of which sold these tickets and a few even stated that Bon Iver was not confirmed for the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I even emailed the special events department at Hollywood Forever and my inquiry never received a response. When I was finally directed to www.ticketweb.com two weeks after I began searching, the show was already sold out.

Mr. Voith, as the person in charge of booking Bon Iver’s shows, I am very surprised that an event of this kind was not advertised better or that the tickets were not more accessible. Perhaps my ranting in unimportant to you since the demand for these tickets has increased the popularity of this artist while also boosting his value. But please let me remind you, the whole point of the indie genre is about having an artist who does not attract the trendy crowd who’s willing to pay $100 or more for a concert that is so maxed out that the music becomes only secondary to the massive event.

Furthermore, tickets that create this kind of demand also go against the Folk culture and I am sure that Bon Iver will loose a few fans if he becomes similar to a mainstream artist. I’m not sure that he is entirely marketed in this way, but again, I am very surprised that the high demand for these tickets was not predicted. Now scalpers are preventing Bon Iver’s true fans from enjoying great music while the sun rises on that Sunday morning.

Thanks a lot. Great way to screw us over!

I simply don’t have 100 dollars to freely spend during this kind of economic climate. I REALLY REALLY wanted to go. I’m so angry right now. Fuck.

The google has adsense and adwords. You can directly log in and folllow the procedures. You need not buy any CD or log in to any other site. I do not wish to comment on the amount spent by you.
If you want to post ads and make money online, you can use google adsense and adwords. It is slightly difficult and takes some time to settle. Take care and do not buy anything.

Am I bound to this contract?

I wanted to use a pet transport service to have our puppy shipped to us as she is not a breed that can fly. When I called this company I was given the price and gave the details of when I wanted her delivered. It was important to have her delivered on that day as I took off work and the girl I spoke to assured me it was possible. I gave her my credit card and was promptly charged. At no time was I told of a contract pr agreement nor was anything emailed or mailed to me. I was not even directed to the website.
After paying I wanted to confirm the time that our dog would be picked up and got in touch with the company (with much difficulty) an was told that there was a window of 2 weeks in which she would be picked up! This was unacceptable to me for obvious reasons and o requested a refund. My grounds are that the company would not be able to provide the service they advertises. After several weeks I received a refund in an amount almost 200 dollars than what I paid! I emailed the owner and was told that there was a 25% cancellation fee.
After investigating the website o found in a small corner the purchase agreement. It does state that there is a cancellation fee.
Am I bound to this purchase agreement given the above?
I didn’t sign, I wasnt told, and they did not deliver.
Please help!
Could I be released from this if the company misrepresented itself? I paid with the understanding that my dog would be delivered on a certain day.
I understAnd that this company isn’t making money but consider the following

A) I called to cancel a week later before any plans had been made
B) I paid for one thing and then was told that I wouldn’t be able to get it

if you bought a toaster bc you wanted to toast bread but then after you found out that it actually is a coffee maker, would you bot return it expecting your money back?

Tom & Susan answers:

The owner has eat the cancellation fees and expenses associated with this type of business. Which are then transferred to the customer. 25% sounds like a pretty fair price for this fee. Mainly if the animal has to fly then the airliner needs to be a way to accommodate animal and even more if a natural disaster hits like Irene. All of this costs money and costs money to book these costs up front. If the customer decides to cancel there plans. Why should the business eat these costs when the customer wanted to use this service. I am sure the only reason they say they give you a two week window. If just in case something happens like hurricane Irene or terrorist. Basically the unknown. Its not a perfect business but they are not making any money off this transaction. Your giving of the credit card information entered you into the purchase agreement because you want them to provide you with there service. If someone else used your credit card then that would be fraud. Yet, you gave it so you are entered into the purchase agreement. Like I said 25% is a pretty fair price.

advice on applying for my dream job. 10 POINTS FOR BEST ADVICE!!!?

I’m 22 years old, and about to apply for my absolute dream job, but i have a problem.

I saw the job advertised in a national newspaper (online version), and e-mailed my CV, with a very brief note attached.

However, i have now discovered who the job is for (in the newspaper, it was directed to a job agency who would forward the details on), and went onto their website. On their website, they list a few extra skills that i would need, and i have all those skills, but because they were not mentioned in the newspaper advertisement, i didn’t put them down in my CV. Also, they said please attach a covering letter about why you want this job etc, but my additional note/covering letter was extremely brief.

I want to send my CV directly to the company, rather than through the newspaper and job agency, because it would be better than the earlier one i sent. However, would sending 2 CV’s in, one with a better covering letter, mean that they would get annoyed and not consider me.

What would be your advice? Should i leave it as it as, or go ahead and send them my reworked CV.

golden compass?

i just got this, and frankly i’m a little surprised.

-I just received an e-mail warning about an upcoming movie for children in December. It’s called “The Golden Compass” and stars Nicole Kidman. I don’t know if you have heard anything about it. It will be advertised as a normal children’s film but in the end it is trying to teach children that there is no God. It is based off of a trilogy of children’s books and the author is called Philip Pullman. They evidently do some strange things in the movie and at the very end a girl and a boy are supposed to be depicting Adam and Eve, and then they kill God. They are trying to be very mild about it through the movie until the end, so a lot of parents won’t even know that it’s coming. Also, it will be promoting his books so you may want to become familiar with the author’s name and the books that he writes!
I was astonished that someone would make a movie like this and direct it towards children!!-

your thoughts?
shouldn’t atheists have the same right to make movies as anyone else?
i’m definitely going to see it.
i haven’t read the books yet, so i can’t say if they go beyond just a good book to an attack. i plan on reading them as soon as i can.

It’s a movie from 3 books. Pure escape fantasy.
If parents are not living up to their responsibilities I’m sure the children are dealing with larger issues and will survive going to a movie.
Children have good parents (and some have bad parents) – they all grow up eventually to be productive adults – due to their own internal drive, and desires/goals. Reality has more danger than a fantasy movie.

Should I maybe put it in the objectives? A lot of the jobs I have been applying for are on craigslist or ones that have their own app. site that only allow you to upload a resume and not a cover letter. On craigslist they don’t even mention the company names so there is no way to include one or to follow up. I am really stuck!

I think it sounds pretty good actually. My suggested tweaks are meant to be constructive criticism only.

Objective
“I am interested in building a career at the company I am employed with.”
-Sounds too vague…maybe something like *Seeking to build long term career with company using my dynamic customer service skills to help grow their business potential.*

Your verb tenses change throughout the resume. All should be either past or present tense. Example: In your Front Desk position you stated you “managed, performed, and resolved” but in your Paramedic position you were ” assessing, directing, and resolving”.

Your past positions are not very centralized. Some employers see this as good (variation of experiences make you more well rounded) where others see this as bad (he/she doesn’t seem focused, why is he/she jumping around to all this different types of employment?). It’s best to really play up what all these positions had in common…the element of customer service. You seem to have grasped that concept and are working with it, but it should have a BIGGER impact. I’d try to work on that a bit.

Make sure in addition to providing your resume you have a really strong cover letter. It can sometimes make or break your chance of getting a second look for a possible interview.

Make sure you are following up with employers. Be persistent without being a nag. The more times you can get your name into someone’s ear or across their desk the better chances you’ll have of getting an interview.

There are so many candidates out there for every open job position these days you have to make sure you are ACTIVELY applying for jobs, not PASSIVELY applying. Meaning it’s critical that you are making things happen & not relying on them to call you back.

To be honest, I think your resume sounds really good…just make it a little STRONGER to stand out.

I hope this helps a bit and I wish you tons of luck!

EDIT:: No disrespect to Starfish_5, but a 2-3 page resume is way too long. Don’t stretch things out to fill up paper. Recruiters want things they can get through fast. They have a million other resumes sitting in a pile they need to go through. Make it short and sweet. A strong, short resume is better than a long winded discertation that they are going to get bored with & toss you to the side. The idea of a resume is a quick summary designed to catch the attention of the reader.

Does President Obama practice what he preaches?

African Kin Seek Obama’s Help – But President Offers no Special Aid or Access

By Farah Stockman, Globe Staff | September 13, 2009

(Photos By Boniface Mwangi for The Boston Globe)
President Obama’s relatives put up a sign showing his lineage in the village of Kobama
which means “land of Obama,’’ where his great-grandfather is buried.

KOGELO, Kenya – After Barack Obama was elected to the US Senate in 2004, a delegation from the remote African village where his father was raised journeyed to Washington, seeking financial help. But Obama offered them advice, not money.

Now that Obama has moved to the White House, expectations of financial benefit have grown even greater in this tiny hamlet where water is still delivered to thatched huts on the backs of donkeys.

“There are still those who are waiting for him to send millions,’’ said Nicholas Rajula, a Kogelo businessman.

Dreams alone seem to be sustaining those counting on an economic boom in this rural corner of western Kenya, near Lake Victoria, where the American president’s father – also named Barack Obama – grew up and where many of his relatives remain.

In Kogelo, the village where Barack Sr. was raised, there is no restaurant or post office to speak of. Two hours from the nearest city, it is not on most maps.

Still, the price of land here has skyrocketed because of rampant speculation about an Obama family museum that the Kenyan Ministry of Tour ism has promised to build. And there have been some modest, but tangible, signs of progress that seem tied to the village’s new notoriety. Within a week of Obama’s election victory last year, the government began to pave the main road to town. It also brought in an electricity and water lines to Obama’s step-grandmother’s compound.

Some relatives have also set up foundations, trying to raise money for development projects using the Obama name. And strangers are suddenly a common sight in the market, attracted by safari companies that advertise heritage tours about the first African-American US president. A tourist hotel is planned.

But what is missing is a direct infusion of cash from Obama or the US government, say local residents and members of the extended Obama family, some of whom say they have relayed funding requests through e-mails and letters to Washington. That expectation might come as a surprise in the United States, where such gifts are not an obligation and Obama is not considered a particularly wealthy man. But in Kenya, where politicians are often judged by how much financial help they funnel to family and tribe, the lack of cash donations from the president has caused some consternation.

Rajula, the Kogelo businessman who funded the delegation’s trip to Washington in 2005, said Obama encouraged the group – which included his own uncle – to form self-help organizations and apply for funding through official channels, such as USAID.

“There is no money that comes from his pocket,’’ Rajula said.

A White House official said: “The president’s policy of pointing aid requests to official channels is consistent with his message of good governance’’ in Africa.

USAID press officer Harry Edwards said the agency gives no special consideration to Obama’s family members or organizations hailing from his family’s home area.

Still, relatives in Kenya believe that Obama’s presidency will bring development, one way or another, so much so that two villages are competing to claim his ancestral roots: Kogelo, the place his father grew up and is buried, and Kobama, a village about 100 miles away where the president’s great-grandfather settled and where the majority of his estimated three hundred relatives remain. In Kobama, which literally means “land of Obama,’’ family members have fixed up his great-grandfather’s grave, erected a signpost outlining his lineage, and gladly receive a steady stream of curious visitors. Now, they too, are angling to put up a museum near the mud house where President Obama slept when he visited as a young man.

Charles Oluoch, a second cousin of the president who chairs a new family foundation seeking development funds, said Obama’s Harvard-educated father helped the boys of Kobama with jobs and school fees. “Now we expect the president to take over,’’ he said.

But he added that he understands Obama has higher priorities.

“This man is USA material and he has to fulfill all his campaign promises,’’ he said.

“He should feed his family first – the USA people.’’

Obama was raised by his Kansas-born mother, and only met his Kenyan father once. But he tracked down a sprawling family in Kenya after his father’s 1982 death, while researching his autobiography, Dreams from my Father.

In the book, Obama grappled with the idea of Western guilt, questioning how much he could help the huge extended family he was meeting for the first time.

“Now I had responsibilities,’’ Obama wrote in 1995.

“But what did that mean exactl

You have experience and that’s great. First, understand that the economy is in a bad state right now, and lots of people are not getting responses. There are many people, but fewer jobs also. But, from my perspective, I think you should make sure it’s a one page resume. Also, use the proper grammatical format and make sure that you use professional wording. Don’t go back past 10 years on your resume (this protects you from age discrimination). And don’t be repetitive in your use of your words. And, there was a book out called “Resumes that Knock em dead”. Check for it at your local library. It is excellent. Jobstar.org has great resume templates. I hope this helps.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what do I do with a stock certificate?

Ok, I was recently laid off from my job. As a result I had to close my employee stock option account with the company that was holding the stocks.
I was hoping they would simply mail me a check but instead the only option was to get a stock certificate, it’s in my name along with my minor son as joint tenant.
So, do I just call a broker to sell them? Will there be a problem selling them as my son as joint tenant?
Also anyone have any idea on what the fee might be? This is the only stock that I have ever purchased and it was a direct debit from my pay check, and have never had to sell stock, so I am completely clueless as to how to go about it. I’ve visited a few sites such as Scott Trade, TD Ameritrade, E-Trade and have looked at their fees. I have no idea where this falls, it’s not an electronic trade, so it won’t be the advertised $9.99 per trade fee. Then there’s the commission….
So am I looking at $9.99 + whatever fee to handle paper stock (perhaps that would fall under the broker assisted trade? Which was an additional $25) + a % commission on top of that? And how is this calculated? Per share or by value?
So some guidance would be appreciated, some sort of an idea of what fees I might be looking at and any recommendations as to a good broker, I am looking for the lowest fees, this will probably be my only trade.
Lord I feel like an idiot, but this is something I have absolutely no experience in.
Thanks in advance.
Not sure I know what you mean by what kind it is or if it’s listed. But it’s NASDAQ Global Select, whatever that means and it’s common stock if that helps.

Tom & Susan answers:

You will need to open a brokerage account with the identical registration to that on the stock certificate (i.e. Your account will need to be registered with your son as a joint tenet.) You can then deposit the stock certificate into the account and then you can make your decisions for trading there. Most firms like the ones you mention charge a flat fee for trading and do not charge a commission fee on top of the trading fee. I don’t believe it would be considered a broker assisted trade, unless you went into one of there investor centers and asked for one of their brokers to place the trade for you. The deposit of a stock certificate is treated in the same manner as any deposit of funds, and there is no extra fee typically associated with it.

      (CIO of Dell Computers)

   8. Quote from the boss: “Teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say.”
(Marketing Executive, Citrix Corporation)

   9. My sister passed away and her funeral was scheduled for Monday. When I told my boss, he said she died so that I would have to miss work on the busiest day of the year. He then asked if we could change her burial to Friday. He said, “That would be better for me.”
(Shipping Executive, FTD Florists)

  10. We know that communication is a problem, but the company is not going to discuss it with the employees.
(AT&T Long Lines Division)

  11. We recently received a memo from senior management saying, “This is to inform you that a memo will be issued today regarding the subject mentioned above.”
(Microsoft Legal Affairs Division)

  12. As director of communications, I was asked to prepare a memo reviewing our company’s training programs and materials. In the body of the memo one of the sentences mentioned the “pedagogical approach” used by one of the training manuals. The day after I routed the memo to the executive committee, I was called into the HR director’s office and was told that the executive VP wanted me out of the building by lunch. When I asked why, I was told that she wouldn’t stand for “perverts” (pedophiles?) working in her company. He showed me her copy of the memo, with her demand that I be fired, with the word “pedagogical” circled in red. The HR Manager was fairly reasonable, and once he looked the word up in his dictionary and made a copy of the definition to send to my boss, he told me not to worry. He would take care of it. Two days later a memo to the entire staff came out, directing us that no words which could not be found in the local Sunday newspaper could be used in company memos. A month later I resigned. In accordance with company policy, I created my resignation letter by pasting words together from the Sunday paper.
(Taco Bell Corporation)

  13. This gem is the closing paragraph of a nationally circulated memo: “Lucent Technologies is endeavorily determined to promote constant attention on current procedures of transacting business focusing emphasis on innovative ways to better, if not supercede, the expectations of quality!”

Help Me please I am really confused.?

Lim Clothing Company manufactures its own designed and labeled sports attire and sells its products through catalog sales and retail outlets. While Lim has for years used activity-based costing in its manufacturing activities, it has always used traditional costing in assigning its selling costs to its product lines. Selling costs have traditionally been assigned to Lim’s product lines at a rate of 70% of direct material costs. Its direct material costs for the month of March for Lim’s “high intensity” line of attire are $400,000.
Need help!! rearrange this essay into headings! esay best answer!?

Advertisement:

Advertising is a form of communication that companies and brands use to persuade potential customers to buy or consume their products and services. There are several different types of advertising, all developed for different purposes.
Covert advertising, for instance, is when a product or brand is included in entertainment and media. For example covert advertising can be seen in films such as I, Robot, where main character played by Will Smith often refers to his Converse shoes, calling them “classics,” because the film is set far in the future. I, Robot and Spaceballs also include futuristic cars with the Audi and Mercedes-Benz logos displayed on the vehicles.

When a company is producing an advertisement they have to consider their target audience. For instance using bright colours and simple language would attract young children. If a company were selling a beauty product, they would typically use models, as customers want to feel and look confident and by using someone attractive to sell the product, a customer would naturally believe that it will make them appear more appealing, therefore the customer makes an impulse purchase. Where the advertisement is situated is also very important, by placing a billboard advertising a product aimed at teenagers, by a retirement home would be quite pointless as would be advertising Zima frames by a youth club.

A majority of television commercials feature a song or jingle that listeners soon associate to the product. Good examples of this would be Hastings direct, Clillit bang and McCain’s. The music that is used is extremely important, and can change the way a customer sees the product. There are also other ways to advertise products other than via television. Companies also use billboards, newspapers, magazines and most recently the internet. Emails in particular are becoming popular amongst companies but can be seen to customers as unwanted and an annoyance, such e-mails are often referred to as ‘spam’ or ‘junk’.

Now i need someone to rearrange this paragraph into idfferent headings, which are:

1. General description
2. Possible Audiences
3. Standard Components [what does it include]
4. Purpose of this document

You dont have to add any thing just rearrange parts to fit the subject headings please, easy best answer thanks!

Does anyone know any good UK job sites….that aren’t riddled with recruitment agencies???

So many job sites have me pulling my hair out because they are dominated by recruitment agencies and ‘middle-men’ blocking you a direct path to a potential job.

FISH4JOBS is a strong example of this. Recruitment firms advertise posts, but don’t give you all the details until you ring them up and register with them. Then you find after you register you get junk mail from them, and they ring you up 20 times a day offering you jobs that have no correlation to what you told them you want to do.

Does anyone know of any good job sites where these recruitment agencies aren’t thriving, and you get a more direct dialogue with employers?

Agencies are such a pain in the neck!

It depends on the job you are looking for but sector1.net is a good site for public sector jobs. It links you straight to the job with salary, location, organisation, etc without having to ring anybody up to find out information. It usually has a link straight to the application form as well.

Besides Traffic Geyser, there is a free service called Tube Mogul. It works in much the same way. Additionally there is a software package I found called Tube Mastery (http://www.websitemarketingskills.com/recommends/TubeMastery) which works really well in terms of how to market on YouTube. The same basic information is true on the other sites, as well. Use your profile page to link to your site and use calls to action to get people to respond. I would just buy that program and familiarize yourself with it.

ebay question? should i leave negative feedback? see details?

2 weeks ago i bought a mac eyeshadow set off ebay. the way the item was advertised i just presumed that the seller had the item in hand.
after 2 weeks i hadnt heard anything so i mailed the seller to see if the item had been shipped yet.
i got a reply stating that they had refunded my payment as this item was no longer available at mac and they were unable to order it .
now i’m sorry if i’m being ignorant here but the reason i ordered if off ebay is cos i knew the item was sold out at mac stores and online. if it hadnt have been then i would have bloomin gone direct to mac wouldnt i ??!!!!
surely if someone is advertising something that they don’t actually have they should make this clear ?!
hey what the hell i think i’ll go on ebay and advertise a piano for sale and then when someone orders it i’ll think about ordering one in !!!!??
should i leave negative feedback ? or is the seller well within their rights to have done this – it doesnt seem right to me.
thanks
thanks for all the top notch answers. i’m not generally such an angry person honest ! i think i’ll go with what several people have said and just not leave any feedback. they haven’t left me any feedback yet and i can imagine they’ll end up leaving me something negative to retaliate so i’ll end up worse off.

To be honest, I would bother with feedback – whatever you give they will only give you back – even though you haven’t done anything wrong! Don’t expect someone who is selling something they don’t have to be reasonable!

Its direct material costs for the month of March for Lim’s “high intensity” line of attire are $400,000.
I don’t think writing “responsible for” or “accountable for” is a good idea as it’s not really a verb. Try “Interpreted, revised, completed, and translated mechanical drawings…” instead of “responsible for interpreting…” because the former is actually a verb-based list rather than just a list of words. Do the same for “accountable for.” Same with “had artwork displayed at…”: do “Displayed Surrealist Artwork at…” because displayed is a much stronger verb than had- “had” as in “I had breakfast this morning”? No, use displayed.

Also, all that you’ve done and are currently doing should still be written in past tense- I think you’ve done that correctly here but just keep that fact in mind.

I’ve never written “Refrences available upon request” on any of my resumes thus far and I hear it’s an outdated thing now, that people don’t write that at all now because there are now many more people looking for work than jobs available to them, so take that line off completely. If potential employers need references, they’ll tell you.

With all dates in the first half, use – not , or to and for most recent graduation can also just say May 2007 and not have to include Sep 2004 on there- but that’s up to you.

Also, since your professional section says “experience,” use the same word in the volunteer section – take the “s” off of “experiences” to keep consistent.

Is 6 weeks acceptable to finally hear back about a job application?

I just received a reply via snail mail about a job I applied to 6 weeks ago! The answer was they already hired someone, but we will keep your resume on file, blah blah blah. I have sent out numerous cover letters/resumes to job ads in the local newspaper. I have also applied to many jobs online either through their direct website or through a job match or career center site. To date, I have only heard from 3 prospective employers. All “thanks but no thanks”. These jobs are no longer advertising but I have not been called for an interview nor have I received a No answer. How long do I wait to follow up? Or should I assume that no news is bad news and they don’t want me? I cannot wait that long to hear about a job. I need to know sooner so I can move onto the next one. Is 6 weeks of no response the norm nowadays or is that company just unprofessional for leaving me (and others) hanging?

Don’t expect a “no thanks” letter or call. It you get one, that’s a bonus. But it is not the norm.

If you had a bad date, would you call the guy back and say to the guy, “Well, I won’t be going out with you again. Thanks though.”

Don’t wait for a job. Keep applying. If you accept a job, and then get a better off, you quit the first one and hope the second one really is better.

You can try texting unsubscribe back to it.

However, there is no way to forcibly stop them from texting. You cant block texting for specific locations.

The only thing you can do is put a complete texting block on your phone by contacting your provider.

They got your number because at some point you probably got a free ringtone or something off the web. Doing so adds your number to spam lists.

The Yahoo “Spam” feature is wonderful. How about “Obscene” and Illegal” buttons also?

Serious talk! On those rare occasions when the Yahoo “Bulk” misses an unsolicited e-mail, the spam is almost always either illegal or pornographic or both. How do we get rid of this garbage? And, for the record, I do NOT CARE if their are ADULT pornographic websites.

I just don’t want this garbage in my Inbox.

Since the Yahoo Spam feature is so excellent (and they are so good at categorizing questions, etc.) how come all the kiddie porn and misleading advetising can’t be similarly directed to either the Police directly or to the Canadian Competition Bureau Misleading Advertising Division?

Tom & Susan answers:

That is a really great idea. I know I get alot of horrible junk e-mails every day. Like you said, most get spammed, but some make it though. I know there is an American e-mail address where you can send junk e-mail. I don’t know if they actually do anything with it though. The address is spam@uce.gov. There might be something from the Canadian government that’s along the same lines. I managed to find that they apparently are attempting something do combat it…mind you that was from 2004. Here’s the website: http://e-com.ic.gc.ca/epic/internet/inecic-ceac.nsf/en/h_gv00246e.html
Who knows if they’ll actually succeed in trying to do anything about it though. If you do get e-mails containing kiddie porn, I would send an e-mail to the local police department, just telling them that you recieved this e-mail from such-and-such an address, maybe attach the e-mail. Or even go in person, with the e-mails printed off, or a list of addresses you recieved them from if you can’t find an address. Good luck combating the never ending spam!

Will you shop at Costco for Christmas?

That’s a pretty simple question, yes or no.”

What’s the most important quality for a daycare?

I own my own daycare. For the first time, I have openings (2) and no waiting list. It seems my advertising hasn’t been too effective either. What is the most important thing for you when selecting your daycare, that must be included in the description? This is my ad (minus the contact info, which is actually in the ad):

Most people think that you can only get quality, affordable child care on base at the CDC. That is totally not the case. Family Child Care Providers are usually just as affordable (and in my case more) as the CDC, and offer as much interaction, education, and professionalism as the CDC.

If you’re looking for a clean, loving, educational, and professional environment, then Bright Horizon’s Learning Center is for you.

Two openings for children over the age of 2 will become available December 8, 2008.

The center is open from 0500 to 1900 to accommodate as many military parents as possible, and children are even accepted on the weekends as necessary.

When in my care, your child will participate in Montessori styled activities as a group, be encouraged to self start on an individual basis, eat nutritious food that I provide, nap in a quiet, sanitary environment, and enjoy lots of fresh air during outside play.

My rates are better than the CDC: $100/week, and I participate in the Air Force Subsidy program, which means you may not even pay that much.

I also participate in the USDA food program, which monitors the food I serve to ensure quality nutrition for your child.

If you’re looking for a flexible, fun, loving, learning place to send your child, and need the piece of mind that they are well taken care of, please don’t hesitate to call or email!

Looking for Flash animators for independent project.?

I am an upcoming film school student who is looking to strengthen his portfolio. I am in need for Macromedia Flash animators to help me create a short web series based on A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning. I would provide scripts and audio samples to help animators with mouthes. Unfortunately, this is a non-profit project and no cash will be given. What I will give is advertising at the beginning and end of videos for what ever company or website you would like. I will also give credit at the end of each video.

The project will be of 13 videos of each 3 – 7 minutes long. I will accept animation in swf, mpg, wmv, or other formats as long as you notify me before hand.

Please e-mail me at jacobnoah1@yahoo.com if you are interested for the part. The animation will be of a gothic form. Please e-mail me a sample of your animation, just so I can review it.

If the series is a success, then I may direct a second season based on The Reptile Room.

Sincerely,

What are the rules for using a photo of a private home to advertise for a certain product?

I own a direct mail company that features printed ads mailed directly to consumers. I have a new client that promotes synthetic, backyard putting greens but does not have any good images to use. Fortunately, I have a great synthetic putting green in my back yard. I have some good photos and I am planning to use those photos to promote my new client’s business.
Is there any law that would prohibit me from using these images since my client is not the original installer of the product? If the original installer sees the advertisement and recognizes his work, can he sue me or send a cease and disist order?
Just to remind you, I own the home where the putting green exists. The picture of the putting green is from my property.

I’m not an attorney, so find one in your area.

I do not believe that your account can be attached, because your SSI check is deposited there. You can ask the judge to exclude you from the lawsuit, if you did not authorize the purchase. If you have a claim against the advertiser for improperly placing the ad, then you have an affirmative defense against the bill.

What sort of punishment does this man desirve?

Man described as a top spammer arrested

By GENE JOHNSON, AP Legal Affairs WriterThu May 31, 8:02 AM ET

A 27-year-old man described as one of the world’s most prolific spammers was arrested Wednesday, and federal authorities said computer users across the Web could notice a decrease in the amount of junk e-mail.

Robert Alan Soloway is accused of using networks of compromised “zombie” computers to send out millions upon millions of spam e-mails.

“He’s one of the top 10 spammers in the world,” said Tim Cranton, a Microsoft Corp. lawyer who is senior director of the company’s Worldwide Internet Safety Programs. “He’s a huge problem for our customers. This is a very good day.”

A federal grand jury last week returned a 35-count indictment against Soloway charging him with mail fraud, wire fraud, e-mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering.

Soloway pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon to all charges after a judge determined that — even with four bank accounts seized by the government — he was sufficiently well off to pay for his own lawyer.

He has been living in a ritzy apartment and drives an expensive Mercedes convertible, said prosecutor Kathryn Warma. Prosecutors are seeking to have him forfeit $773,000 they say he made from his business, Newport Internet Marketing Corp.

A public defender who represented him for Wednesday’s hearing declined to comment.

Prosecutors say Soloway used computers infected with malicious code to send out millions of junk e-mails since 2003. The computers are called “zombies” because owners typically have no idea their machines have been infected.

He continued his activities even after Microsoft won a $7 million civil judgment against him in 2005 and the operator of a small Internet service provider in Oklahoma won a $10 million judgment, prosecutors said.

U.S. Attorney Jeff Sullivan said Wednesday that the case is the first in the country in which federal prosecutors have used identity theft statutes to prosecute a spammer for taking over someone else’s Internet domain name. Soloway could face decades in prison, though prosecutors said they have not calculated what guideline sentencing range he might face.

The investigation began when the authorities began receiving hundreds of complaints about Soloway, who had been featured on a list of known spammers kept by The Spamhaus Project, an international anti-spam organization.

The Santa Barbara County, Calif., Department of Social Services said it was spending $1,000 a week to fight the spam it was receiving, and other businesses and individuals complained of having their reputations damaged when it appeared spam was originating from their computers.

“This is not just a nuisance. This is way beyond a nuisance,” Warma said.

Soloway used the networks of compromised computers to send out unsolicited bulk e-mails urging people to use his Internet marketing company to advertise their products, authorities said.

People who clicked on a link in the e-mail were directed to his Web site. There, Soloway advertised his ability to send out as many as 20 million e-mail advertisements over 15 days for $495, the indictment said.

The Spamhaus Project rejoiced at his arrest.

“Soloway has been a long-term nuisance on the Internet — both in terms of the spam he sent, and the people he duped to use his spam service,” organizers wrote on Spamhaus.org.

Soloway remained in federal detention pending a hearing Monday.

Now the main problem is collection of payment. I don’t want my inside guy to collect anything at risk of him getting in trouble. I would like to avoid and personal contact if possible. Is there any relatively easy way for them to send payment?
They are one of those silly marketing places.

I would call it a ‘scam’ because it’s more like a run-around. It is for sure a Marketing place of some type, but sorry…I can’t give any more info on it. I skipped over that every time. They are “always hiring” on career websites, of course. Probably because they can’t find enough suckers to push their schemes.

That “congratulations” e-mail reply sounds extremely tacky and generic. Everyone likely gets that automatically sent to them. Notice how it doesn’t even fill in your name as in “Dear ” But rather, uses a generic “Congratulations” as a greeting…with no name to address you. Scammers use this same tactic when trying to pretend to be a bank, Ebay, Paypal, etc. Whereas a real company would incorporate your name and address you directly. Scammers pretending to be legit businesses don’t necessarily know the names of people that have bank accounts, etc. …so that’s why they do it. They don’t list names…just a general greeting. This tells you it’s not that ‘serious’ of a reply – probably thousands of people got that stupid reply.

Don’t bother with them…they seem very scam-like. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I have come across them (I live in Atlanta) while job searching. Skip right over them…even a Retail job is better than something like that. Even if they are real, you can count on having a ton of pressure on you to do their ‘marketing.’ Likely telemarketing…you do all the work while the CEO of the company gets paid for it. There usually aren’t that many ‘employees’ with the company, either…very few. Which is why it’s different than other jobs.

Is there any place where a general contractor can buy building supplies, appliances, etc. for wholesale?

Either nationally (mail order) or locally (in the VA or DC area).

Something like that Direct Buy that they advertise on TV, though I’m looking for a legit business, not a scam.

Tom & Susan answers:

You want to know where contractors buy their stuff? (If you were one, you would know already, unless you just started)

Contractors buy from wholesalers or the company that makes the stuff. You want to buy appliances like stoves and refrigerators? Go to the website of the big makers like Whirlpool and find out where the nearest wholesalers are if you can’t find them in the Yellow pages. If you are building a house, for instance, go talk to the boss on the house being built down the street, “Hey, where do you get your best deal on —?” They’ll talk. They may also tell you who gave them their worst deal just to play with you, but even there ask one of the other customers “Where do you get your best deal on ——–?”

Then there are the trade and industry publications and websites. First you find the place that makes the stuff you want, then you find from them who sells it nearby (and if there is more than one start asking both for prices, availability, delivery, etc. Because some may have it and others don’t–I saw one sell stuff that the other had, tacked on a little extra, then went to the other to buy it)

It doesn’t take much looking to find them unless you are asking for something really special and unique. As for non-commercial, your private use, DirectBuy is about as good as it will get. You can contact me for some specific ideas if you are really in business and it isn’t coming together.

How many credit card offers do you get in the mail every week?

I get a minimum of six per week from the major credit companies. If I’m not mistaken, the entire reason for commercials is to convince us that we NEED a product. Consider the massive, overwhelming advertising campaign which is directed at convincing us that we DESERVE more and that we CAN have more by paying on credit. Think about it. Who is to blame? The people who fall for the advertising and marketing propaganda or the credit card PUSHERS?
I do throw them all away. I’d say the fault lies with the companies that approve questionable applications. I mean really. Use some common sense here. Blaming the recipients of “Pre Approved” credit offers is nothing more than a handy decoy for the real problem which is a combination of excessive advertising and predatory lending policies.

Tom & Susan answers:

I get plenty. I always thought the reason was that I don’t have any credit cards. I don’t use them, and I advise others not to. There are several reasons for this.

1. Using a credit card (or even a debit card) opens you up to identity theft. I use cash for my transactions. Everybody takes cash. I prefer cash. There is no question of identity theft.
2. Credit cards add about 3% to the cost of the items you purchase with them. That’s right, the credit card companies charge the merchants about 3% on each credit card purchase. That’s why I try to shop where credit cards are no accepted, or where you get a discount for using cash (many gas station are doing this).
3. Cash is anonymous. When I make a purchase, it’s nobody’s business but mine. I don’t need a third party. In the vast majority of cases, the other person in the transaction doesn’t know who I am. And that’s the way I like it.
4. I don’t like paper work. I think it is an imposition to fill our paperwork to purchase a firearm, or an automobile. I am certainly not going to do it to purchase groceries, or a pair of shoes.

Incidentally, when I receive credit card solicitations, I take everything the sent me, including the outside envelope, and stuff it in the postage-paid return envelope, and send it back to them. This gives me the satisfaction of getting rid of some of my junk mail, and making them pay for it.

I consider credit card companies, legal loan sharks. They charge people usurious interest. People who can handle money don’t need credit cards. And people who can’t handle money, can’t afford them. My philosophy has always been, if I don’t have the money to purchase something, I can’t afford it (with the exception of a mortgage). I have never had money problems. I have always save a good portion of my income, rather than to go into debt.

Enfamil users — will you consider switching?

“Mead Johnson, Maker of Enfamil, Loses Multi-Million Dollar False Advertising Case Against Store-Brand Infant Formulas

…The nutritional supplements under examination in the case are two fats, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid), which Mead Johnson calls “LIPIL®” solely for marketing purposes and touts as promoting infant brain and eye development. PBM’s claim focused on Mead Johnson’s direct mailing to more than 1.6 million parents of an alarming blurry picture of a child’s cartoon duck next to a clear picture of the same image which suggested that anything other than the Enfamil LIPIL® blend of ingredients is inferior and will result in poor eye and brain development. Other parts of the false advertising campaign consist of statements that only Enfamil LIPIL has been proven to confer visual and mental benefits on infants, and store-brand formulas are a “cut-back in nutrition” compared to Enfamil.

PBM successfully argued that these advertisements were false and misleading especially since PBM store- brand infant formulas have the same nutrients at the same levels as Enfamil. PBM infant formulas are formulated to contain DHA and ARA, and are sourced from the same supplier in amounts which equal or exceed the DHA and ARA in Mead Johnson’s Enfamil LIPIL®.

This decision marks the third time PBM Products has sued Mead Johnson for false advertising claims. On the prior occasions Mead Johnson admitted that it made false claims about PBM’s products…”

Our pediatrician said from the beginning that formula is so highly regulated that basically, it’s illegal for one kind to be inferior or superior to the other.

She also made what I consider to be a very good point. The most common issues with formula feeding are overfeeding and contamination from using formula that’s been sitting around. She didn’t have a study that proved this, but she felt from her experience that both of these problems were at least aggravated by the high cost of formula – the temptation to either force the baby to finish the bottle instead of throwing it away led to over-feeding and the temptation to re-use bottles that had been sitting around leading to infants consuming formula that had gone off.

Formula isn’t perfect, but we were happier with the Target brand ($11 a can compared to $24 for name brands in our area…)

Is it better to sell cars for a small or large car / auto dealer?

I started two weeks ago in auto sales for a small down dealership (town with about a population of 5000). I am 55 and this is my first time selling cars. We started with a major sale with a huge direct mail out and help from an outside company. I did very good. I sold 4 cars in my first week during this sale. Now the sale is over there is absolutely no traffic. I am close to a metro area where the Big Dealerships are always adertising for help. The dealer where I am has a $800 pack, no salary just a $1500 draw at the first of the month. The Big Dealerships in the metro advertise a huge $75K +SALARY + COMISSION first year potential. Some say “No Pack” I don’t have to at least make $45,000, but I am scared to death that having next to no traffic means very little sales. I was told that this place averaged 10 cars a month, and I would be the only sales person. I am confident in my sales ability if I just have some people to work with. Any advise??
